Search for Black Baza

This was my first visit to Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Thattekkad this season. But I was constantly in touch with the local guides there and was waiting for berries in the forest to get ripped, so that I can shoot my target, the Grey-headed Bulbul for which I was struggling for quite some time! Also, I wanted a good shot of Black Baza which I missed in the last season. I got a distant shot last time which was around 200 meters away and it was just a record shot... I was planning to do three sessions, targeting these two species. The first session in the morning was interesting. Though I didn't...

Frames From Wild

It's been almost 6 years since I fall in love with the jungles and wilderness; and it has been a fantastic quest till now. As a Nature Photographer, I have witnessed lots of precious moments  during my journey and I could capture many of them; of course, there were lot of misses as well. These shots may not be artistically beautiful or may not be perfect in photographic perspective due to various reasons - bad light, distance to the subject, limitation of the equipment etc. But many of them are close to my heart especially those, for which I have struggled...

Rarity Expedition @ Mahananda

Rufous-necked Hornbill, Red-headed Trogon, Long-tailed Broadbill, Sultan Tit, Green Magpie, Maroon Oriole... there were 8 targeted species in my mind when I started my journey to Latpanchar of West Bengal. The plan was to visit Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and Singalila; but unfortunately I had to skip Singhalila because of the unexpected weather change. My flight from Bangalore got delayed about an hour and I just missed my train form Kolkata and so I had to catch a bus from Kolkata to Siliguri. It was the worst journey I ever had in my entire life. The road condition...

Hornbills of Valparai

I won't miss any chance to go to Sholayar Forest since it is one of my favourite route and an awesome birding destination. I knew a place in Valparai  (a part of Sholayar Forest range) where there was a Great Hornbill nesting and I has seen lot of pictures from the same spot. It was just 200 kms from my home town in Kerala. I thought why not to have a weekend drive to Valparai; Decided and started on very next day :)  I was accompanied with 2 of my friends; both were nature enthusiasts which made the trip really memorable. We started morning by 4.00 and plan was to reach the destination...

Winter Visit To Tadoba

Tadoba is a place which is close to my heart; it has given me the extreme disappointing as well as the extreme exiting moments. The same happened this time as well. After roaming around Western ghat couple of weeks for migratory winter visitors I have decided to visit Tadoba for a change. As always I came with lot of expectations; beginning wasn't bad; at least I could spot a Tigress (Sitara) in the first safari itself; but couldn't click. When we reached there it went into the bushes. Then started the 3 consecutive dry safaris; actually I didn't even get a single shot. But the tiger movement...

Leopad’ing @ Bera

Can you imagine a village where leopards roaming around freely and are friendly with the villagers. Hard to to believe; but it is true. Bera - a small village in Rajasthan is a real wonder. I had visited Kabini of Karnataka, 4 times in past few months and wasn't lucky enough to get a good shot. Out of of 12 safaris, I could spot only once and couldn't take a shot which I really wanted. The specialty of Kabini is, the leopards with green background- it looks really amazing with their shining fire coloured skin in green background. That's the reason I have visited Kabini frequently after...

Into the heart of Himalayas

I was planning to visit Himalayas for a long time and almost decided to go to Ladakh; but the last moment I changed my plan and decided to visit Lahaul & Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, which wasn't a popular destination like Ladakh. I was pretty much impressed with the landscape images which I have seen in web. Since the month of July, the Monsoon was already at the peak in South India and I haven't gone for a trip for a long time. Probably this would be the first time I have planned a trip only for landscape photography. I flew to Delhi and from Delhi to Manali overnight journey by bus. We were...

My Introduction to Himalayan Birds

I have been fortunate to explore most of the well known birding spots of southern side of India and have a good collection of Western Ghat birds. This was the first time I went to northern side exclusively for Himalayan birds. The plan was to visit three places Sattal, Nainital and Mukteshwar. It was a 9 day trip combined with Ranthambore & Bera of Rajasthan. As planned I have visited Bera and Ranthambore (both places were fantastic, indeed) first and Myself and 2 of my friends traveled to Nainital from Delhi. April was a very good time for birding and I was little bit worried, because...

Surprise in Thattekkad

It was a surprise when I visit Thattekkad this time. It is the nearest well known bird sanctuary in my home town; it is just 75 km of journey. I have visited Thattekkad lot of times and I used to roam around the visiting area. Of course there are lot of birds but photographing them is really difficult. The forest is dense and we cannot expect the birds in eye level. Always they will be at the top and the background will be bad with shadows and highlights. I had a notion that Thattekkad is only good for bird watchers not for photographers. I should say thanks to my friend Priya for arranging...

Sri Lankan Trip

I was thinking to visit Yala National Park for a long time since it has the highest concentration of leopards in the world. In my personal opinion Leopards are the most beautiful creature in cat family as Snow leopard & Jaguar are out of scope for me as of now :) and I wanted to visit Yala specifically for leopards. On 23rd Dec 2014, myself and my friend Sarath flew to Colombo from Chennai. We have completed the visa process soon as we had already taken the ETA online. There was in fact, 8 hour journey to Tissamaharama where the Yala National Park situated. I was really afraid of the weather,...
